Have you ever heard of Omakase (Oh-Mah-kah-say)? If you live in Japan you have. It turns out that in Japan an Omakase  is known as "Chef's Choice". It's up to the chef what courses, and how many, will be served.  What's a triangle-shaped watermelon got in common with it? Only that they were both experienced in Japan recently by my friend Rachael, of lafujiama.com. Rachael and I both have an adoration of the country of Japan in common. So much so that when I found out she was going to Japan a few weeks ago I contacted her to tell her how excited I was for her. One thing led to another, and before I knew it we were making plans to talk while she was in Japan and I was here in the U.S. We weren't sure it would work, but it did! So grab a cup of coffee, and join us in the kitchen as Rachael talks about her recent experience in Japan at Kaikaya by the Sea restaurant, and of course that triangle shaped watermelon! Take a look at Rachael's photos below to see if you can spot the courses she mentions in my podcast episode, which you can listen to by clicking on the arrow up at the top of this post.

Be sure to stop by La Fuji Mama's blog where she has a special video waiting for you about her trip to Japan!

Thank you for sharing the great conversation! As a Japanese, it's always nice to learn that people in the United States are interested in the food and culture of my home county. I had no idea Japan makes hart shaped water melon!!! That's so funny. But that didn't surprise me... They are obsessed with the looks. At the grocery store, they sell two kinds of strawberries, one with different shapes and sizes, and another with perfectly uniform in size and shape. And yes, the later is expensive! Listening to this made me want to go back to Japan!

I am so enjoying all of your posts. I loved the video on LFM! Rachael never disappoints and now after looking at all of these scrummy fotos I'm quite hungry & very intrigued with a triangle shaped watermelon! xoxo

EMK,

Welcome! It's great to have another "fan" of Japan visiting. I'm glad you enjoyed the post. Sorry about making you miss Japan, but I know just how you feel! The fruit in Japan is remarkable. Thank you for sharing about the strawberries.

Paula,
so glad you are enjoying the interviews and posts! It's been so much fun getting to know so many other food-bloggers. And of course chatting with Rachael while she was in Japan, and I was here in the U.S. was so exciting!
